About Whittier

Uptown Whittier

Whittier, Los Angeles County

The old business district of Whittier is called Uptown, set on rising ground along Greenleaf Avenue and Philadelphia Street. Many of its brick buildings were damaged in the earthquake of October 1, 1987, and later repaired or rebuilt. On the west side of the city, a state park preserves the adobe home of Pio Pico, the last governor of Mexican California.
